St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands - Cruise Port

A slice of North America in the Caribbean, St Croix is definitely unusual, but you'll soon learn that it's all part of its inherent charms. Influences past and present coalesce into a dizzying swirl of Caribbean, colonial, and modern US culture, making it a beach break with an utterly tantalising difference. The Spanish, the British and the Dutch Empires all came to occupy this island at one point or another, giving it a rich and unique history that has never been diminished by the thrills given to the island by modern expansion and an increasingly youthful population.

Picture colonial forts alongside rainforests and you'll come to understand how diverse the landscape of this Virgin Islands paradise really is. The unspoiled and the luxury combine to create a scintillating atmosphere it's not easy to forget. In the end, St Croix is all about experiencing the best of both worlds- the splendour of nature and the excitement of the modern.

Sightseeing in St Croix

Salt River Bay National Historic Park

Not only is this sparkling bay a protected ecological reserve, but it is incredibly important to the history of St Croix as well. Known as Columbus Landing, this site is where the famous explorer was the first European to make contact with the Native Americans. Now a tropical eco sanctuary which is a haven for many endangered species, a tour of this park is a riveting experience even for the most adventurous of cruisers. Make sure to take advantage of the numerous coral reefs in Submarine canyon, for a diving experience unlike any other.

The St Croix Heritage Trail

A 72 mile route through the peaks, valleys and rainforests of St Croix is the perfect way to get a gloriously in-depth look at the island's myriad historical sites. Not that you'll need an expert guide to find your way through the extensive route – you can explore at your own pace due to the brown and white sugar mill symbols that guide visitors along the trail. The journey will take you through sugar plantation ruins, garden markets and scenic coastlines alongside beautiful cattle country.

Buck Island

Just offshore from the township of St Croix, you can find Buck Island, a veritable treasure trove for divers, snorkelers, and anyone with the slightest interest in marine life. At about half a mile wide, Buck Island is surrounded on all sides by coral reefs, nesting grounds for turtles, and even endangered brown pelicans thriving amongst the rocks..

St Croix is a haven for jewellery makers, and they produce some of the finest pieces of gold and silver crafts you're likely to see. Watches, coins, bracelets and rings are all on display in the centre of town, within the brilliantly picturesque storefronts.
