Trabzon Cruise Port

Trabzon is a sprawling and fascinating port on Turkey's Black Sea coast.  Despite its sophisticated cityscape, its central township is blessed with a party atmosphere which provides an unusual but delightful contrast to it rustic qualities. A stroll through its cobblestone streets reveals gorgeous medieval churches, monasteries and picturesque harbours, but its character has always been a vibrant one. Its squares are filled with dancers, performers and musicians of all types, giving it a vibrancy which is a rarity for historical towns.

The illustrious buildings and winding narrow streets are steeped in the past, but the youthful excitement of the locals gives it a modern edge wholly unlike anywhere else on the Turkish coast. Local students weave their way in and out of restaurants and bars that pulsate with a fervent energy, meaning Trabzon's nightlife has a legendary status.  Cruisers are bound to find this enchanting, fun-filled township a worthy foil to the staples of Istanbul and Samsun once they have experienced its beauty for themselves.

Sightseeing in Trabzon

Sumela Monastery

Perched magnificently on the slope of a cliff face, the Sumela Monastery is a sight that has to be seen to be believed. The façade of the monastery appears to defy gravity, extending outward from the mountain side amidst the lush forest south of Trabzon. It is easy to reach from the centre of town, and a tour of its interior is as spectacular as its dramatic placing on the cliff edge. Ancient frescoes line the ceiling, depicting saints, the life of Jesus Christ, and scenes from the New Testament. A forest trail leads to the hidden stairway, carved into the sheer cliff that will guide you to a pathway abundant with locals. This is a truly unique experience, and cruisers happening upon Trabzon should make it a priority.

Today, it is home to a museum detailing the history of the region, and includes exhibits such as World War 2 maps and weaponry, as well as beautifully preserved private studies.

An immense mosque which is only a short walk from the city centre, this beautiful structure was built by Selim the Grim, once the Ottoman ruler of Syria and Egypt, in honour of his mother. The exterior is a vivid example of the traditional architecture of the region, with an alabaster tower and a brightly coloured dome visible from miles away.
