Yalta, Ukraine Cruise Port

Yalta is a fantastic resort town situated in the stunning Crimea Peninsula in Ukraine. In the 19th century, Russian aristocrats, members of the royal family and famous writers such as Anton Chekov would flock to Yalta to cure their ailments for a simple reason- its air. Yalta's breezes are a refreshing blend of sea, forest and the stirring winds that weave around its mountain passes. The peaks and hills that form a makeshift amphitheatre means its climate is subtropical, a rarity for a port in Eastern Europe. Even in the midst of autumn, you fill find its waterfronts balmy and welcoming. Home to the holiday palaces of Russian Tsars, picturesque waterfronts filled with babushkas and local musicians, and a unique connection to history, Yalta is a destination not to be missed when travelling amid the wonders of the Black Sea.

Sightseeing in Yalta

Cathedral of St. Alexander Nevsky

This majestic cathedral is one of the most beautifully preserved Orthodox temples in the whole of Crimea, if not Ukraine. Built in memory as monument to the life of Tsar Alexander the Second, the Cathedral is still active as the main Orthodox temple in Yalta, and an outstanding example of Russian church architecture to boot. On its outside, ornate features such as hearts, portals and pilasters adorn its bright white washed walls. The inlays of its studded archways are painted a bright yellow, complimenting the glinting gilded domes which adorn its fairy-tale spires. The interior is also a breath-taking attraction, featuring beautifully restored iconoclasts of disciples and apostles looking down upon alabaster altars and varnished pews, walls hued with white and pink shades that illuminate the congregation in a heavenly glow, and spacious, airy galleries spread over two tiers.

The Swallow's Nest

One of the most popular visitor attractions in the Yalta region, The Swallow's Nest has become an enduring symbol of the Crimean coast since it was built in 1912. The Neo Gothic architecture of this compact castle, added to the backdrop of the seemingly endless span of the Black Sea, grant it a mythic quality unlike other castles of its kind. The interior is stuccoed and painted in astonishing colours, but the true beauty of the castle come from its astounding view of the coastline. Hanging precariously from the cliffs overlooking the Cape of Ai-Todor, the stone balconies of its observation deck are a perfect place to breathe in the rejuvenating air and gaze upon a landscape of azure seas stretching to the horizon and boats of all colours and size gliding across the waves toward the harbour. A romantic spot to be sure, but still an utterly fantastic part of Yalta's history and culture.

Shopping in Yalta

The Jalta open air market is a spectacle all year-round, as hundreds flock to get a hold of the freshest produce in the region, ranging from mouth-watering fruits such as pomegranates and pineapples which grow in the fertile hills and valleys, to delicious vegetables farmed locally.
