Amalfi, Italy
Located within the Campania region of Italy, Amalfi is a historic town surrounded by breathtaking natural scenery. The town was a popular holiday destination for the British upper class and aristocracy during the early 20th century but is now accessible to all. The region contains impressive cliff faces and incredible coastal scenery alongside exquisite sandy beaches and clear ocean waters. Amalfi also boasts a selection of stunning historic architecture dating back to the middle ages as well as a series of striking modern expansions. The town combines an ultra-luxurious coastal area, littered with expensive yachts and high-end developments, with a much more quaint and rural atmosphere found in the hill villages and tranquil fishing communities.
Sightseeing in Amalfi
A range of activities and sight-seeing opportunities are available to visitors in Amalfi. The local beaches and marinas are a fantastic place to take a stroll and view the astounding scenery found along the coastline. Boat excursions are also available from the marina, sailing guests around the coastal villages and coves of Amalfi and giving them a chance to swim in the ocean water directly from the boat. Various hiking trails and guided tours can be found around the town, so tourists can gain further insight into Amalfi culture and heritage. Excellent examples of historical architecture are scattered throughout the town including impressive and intricate structures and monuments.
Amalfi Cathedral
Saint Andrews Cathedral dates back to the ninth century and is located in Piazza del Duomo region of the Amalfi. Its spectacular Arab-Norman Romanesque architectural design has been renovated several times over the years and dominates the immediate area. The cathedral’s highlights include the Bell Tower, the Bronze Portal and the tremendous mosaic situated on the facade.
The Cloister of Paradise
Known locally as the Chiostro del Paradiso, this amazing monument was erected during the 13th century and was used as a burial place for the noble families of Amalfi. The structure is now an excellent open-air museum with large pillars depicting scenes from ancient Roman legends.
Paper Mill Museum
Amalfi’s Paper Mill Museum celebrates the town’s history as a leading paper manufacturer. Amalfi was once Europe’s main paper making region and the museum contains the Milano family’s original paper factory.
Shopping in Amalfi
The town of Amalfi contains a variety of local artisan workshops producing authentic Italian ceramics and crafts. One of the best areas to find quality Italian ceramics in the region is Vietri sul Mare, where visitors will discover a plethora of small independent shops with colourful window displays. Amalfi also boasts a range of fashion outlets selling everything from expensive designer labels to locally crafted garments.
Eating out in Amalfi
An outstanding range of authentic Italian and international cuisine can be found in restaurants all over Amalfi. As a coastal town, seafood is one of the most popular dishes in the region, with many restaurants boasting first rate seafood menus. The town is home to no less than seven Michelin-starred restaurants as well as a host of family-run establishments.
