Dunedin, New Zealand
Regarded as a Kiwi city with a Scottish heart, Dunedin is often called the Edinburgh of New Zealand. It has a proud Scottish heritage, displayed through the statue of poet Robert Burns in the downtown area, and the country’s only kilt maker and whisky distillery, along with a number of bagpipe bands that fill the city with traditional music. Anyone with an interest in architecture will find many impressive structures to explore, including Lanarch Castle with its impressive views over its picturesque gardens, and Olveston House, a Jacobean-style mansion built at the start of the 20th Century.
Dunedin’s most visited attraction is the Otago Museum – its impressive collection includes over two million artefacts from natural science and human history. You may also wish to visit the magnificent Botanical Gardens, created in the mid-19th Century and with a wonderful collection of beautiful flowers and plant life, including native and imported species. Or you may prefer a trip to the Speights Brewery, one of the most established in the region and creator of the Pride of the South, one of the most popular beers in the country.
The currency in Dunedin is the New Zealand Dollar. Dunedin is 12 hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT +12).
