Muscat, Oman Port
Muscat is a charming and enthralling destination. The capital of Oman, it combines decadence and opulence with a more traditional air, creating a luxurious destination that never feels too overwhelming or gaudy. You can really get to grips with the Oman lifestyle with a visit to the Muttrah Souk. This sprawling marketplace houses stalls selling all manner of wares, from jewellery to spices, with a lively atmosphere making it one of the most exciting shopping experiences you could hope to enjoy, ideal for picking up a souvenir.
Meanwhile the landmarks of Muscat offer spectacular decoration, in particular the ornate façade of the Al Alam Palace, the official residence of Sultan Qaboos bin Said. While the interior of the palace may be closed to visitors, the same is not said of the Grand Mosque, the third largest in the world and home to stunning marble panelling and a breath-taking Swarovski crystal chandelier. You can also escape the city centre on a dhow cruise, to explore the picturesque coastline, or travel inland on a desert safari to see beaches, valleys and an oasis surrounded by mango groves.
The currency in Muscat is the Omani Rial. Muscat is 4 hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT +4).
