Portimao, Algrave Port
Portimao is a commercial port that also serves as the gateway to the Algarve. This dramatic coastline is one of absolutely breath-taking beauty, combining low mountains and cliffs with rugged bays and some of the finest beaches Europe has to offer. The coastal mountains are lined with oak, chestnut and eucalyptus trees, while the bays are home to a number of fascinating sea caves. Whether you take a scenic drive or end up just wandering along one of the pristine sandy beaches, you’ll adore the marvellous views of this distinctive region.
It’s also rich in history, with nearby Lagos being a hub of world exploration in the 15th Century. It is also home to a mix of landmarks and buildings displaying 16th and 17th Century architecture at its finest. Sagres Fortress was once the school where Prince Henry the Navigator trained new voyagers to go and explore, while the Chapel of Santo Antonio is a gorgeous 17th Century church with exquisite decorations. Or you may instead head to Silves, the centre of Portugal’s largest orange growing regions, and home to intricate sites such as a medieval bridge and a Moorish castle.
The currency in Portimao is the Euro. Portimao is 1 hour ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT +1).
