Sullivan Bay (Santiago)
Sullivan Bay (Santiago)
The unique scenery of Sullivan Bay is sure to live long in the memory of any luxury cruise visitor. The surface of the bay features uneroded black lava flows, with preserved lava bubbles and tree-trunk moulds in the surface. The distinctive lands are almost reminiscent of the surface of the moon. Your expert guides will bring you up to speed on the formation of the island as you hunt for the bright red Sally Lightfoot crabs that can frequently be found scuttling across the bay.
On the east of Santiago Island, at Puerto Egas, you’ll find a wide array of local species that are protected by the eroded rocks of the shoreline. If you have a chance to snorkel here, it’s well worth it as there are many schools of tropical fish below the surface. Otherwise look out for Fur seals amongst the coastline. Around the island, you’ll also find sea turtles, marine iguanas and sea lions, as well as goats and pigs that were introduced here by man and have caused much harm to the ecosystems since. Keep an eye out amongst the skies too for Darwin finches and Galapagos hawks flying by.
Santiago Island is 6 hours behind Greenwich Mean Time (GMT -6).
