Syracuse Port
A remarkable city, Siracusa was founded in 734 BC and used to rival Athens as a hub of power and great thinkers at the time. As such, today it is home to a wealth of magnificent ruins that make for a fascinating excursion. Much is centred around the Neapolis Archaeological Park, with three main areas – the stone quarries, the huge Greek theatre, and the Roman amphitheatre. Indeed the region has multiple influences in all its architecture, from Greek and Byzantine through to medieval Judaic, so you’ll delight in the intricate and diverse designs you’ll see.
Head beyond Siracusa and you’ll delight in the magnificent Sicilian countryside, with amazing views of mountains and forests and the chance to wander amongst olive groves and stone villages. You can also climb Mount Etna, one of the most active volcanoes in the world and renowned for its amazing vineyards that grow in the fertile lands around the base. You can also visit nearby destinations such as Noto and Ragusa Ibla, both offering outstanding examples of Baroque architecture and picturesque settings in the rolling hills of the region.
The currency in Siracusa is the Euro. Siracusa is 2 hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT +2).
