The British Virgin Islands are famous the world over for their stunning natural beauty- multitudes of hidden coves, pristine beaches, and light blue waters that lap in gorgeous languid waves onto the shores of hundreds of islands and atolls. Yet within the pantheon of sights that await travellers who embark on a cruise to this stunning archipelago, Virgin Gorda is surely one of the most striking.
Long a hotspot for the rich, famous, and elite, this amazing island features wondrous scenic surroundings that have to be seen to be believed. Virgin Gorda is only eight square miles in size, giving it a pleasing intimacy that doesn't dampen its ability to astonish.
Low green hills sweep across the entire island, blessing much of this compact island with a truly verdant and lush landscape. Although a playground for the world's elite, the island's locals are as familial and friendly as they have ever been, welcoming every tourist to this balmy paradise with true enthusiasm, as well as some fantastic advice for budding explorers.
The Baths National Park
There's a chance that many of the cruiser who make the trip to Virgin Gorda will be more than used to beach holidays. But The Baths National Park is not just another beach trip. This outstanding natural delight is easily reachable from anywhere on the island and features massive granite rock formations that can be scaled with ropes and ladders, giving beach combers an incredible view of the wider shore. Crystal clear sheltered sea pools, pure white beaches, and plentiful sea life are all staples of this wonderful beachhead, making it a priority for cruisers the moment they step on the island.
The North Sound
In the middle section of Virgin Gorda, mountain slopes dominate a landscape of lush forests stretching far to the horizon. Upon the shoreline that lies alongside this stunning vista of peaks is the settlement of The North Sound, which despite its small size, is home to multitudes of yachts of every shape and size arrayed throughout its harbour, marinas that serve the biggest resorts on the island, and late night bars that have panoramic views of the seafront. This thrilling township is worth a visit for the vibrant nightlife alone.
Virgin Gorda Peak
This is the finest mountain on the island, and luckily for intrepid travellers, it is populated by skilled hiking guides and beauty spots. Through a winding trail of lush mountainside pathways, travellers can wind their way to the very top of this stunning peak for the greatest view in the British Virgin Islands bar none.
For foodies, you'll find a bevy of delicious produce you can't find anywhere else at the Bitter End Yacht Club and Chef's Pantry. Gourmet fish and meats, delicious fruits, and exotic confectioneries are all staples to be indulged in. Expect plenty of homemade arts and crafts on the markets, and be prepared to find amazing curio pieces around every corner.
For an elegant experience with a paradise island twist, head to Coco Maya, a beautiful restaurant which features Asian fusion cuisine and stunning sandstone interiors, not to mention unbelievably friendly service. For fine drinks and a gorgeous view of some of the island's best bays, head to Giorgio's Wine Restaurant, which serves gourmet Italian in a truly intimate setting.
