WHY WE RECOMMEND Iberian Peninsula CRUISES

See Iberian Peninsula Cruises

The Iberian Peninsula – commonly referred to as Iberia – is located in south-western Europe and is the third largest of the European peninsulas, encompassing Spain, Portugal and Andorra alongside the British Overseas Territory of Gibraltar and parts of southern France. The region is well-known for its warm Mediterranean climate and boasts a number of famous coastal cities including Barcelona, Porto, Lisbon, Seville and Valencia, all of which are regularly featured on voyages to the region.

Large parts of the Iberian Peninsula are situated within Europe’s Mediterranean region, and as such, Iberian destinations are often included within Mediterranean itineraries.

Iberia has a long and fascinating history, which can be observed at a multitude of historical sites across the region. Visitors can also delve into the local culture of each new port and sample some sumptuous Spanish cuisine or purchase traditional gifts and souvenirs from an abundance of shops and markets found in the vast majority of the peninsula’s ports.

A number of different cruises travel to the Iberian Peninsula throughout the year, usually as part of a Mediterranean voyage, and guests are rewarded with a beautiful climate, stunning scenery and intriguing culture across the region.

There are many luxury Iberian Peninsula cruises available to book right now at SixStarCruises.co.uk with the world's most popular luxury cruise lines, so take a look at what's on offer now and secure your place on-board for the holiday of a lifetime.

Biarritz

Tucked in France’s Côte Basque, Biarritz first came to prominence in the mid-19th century when Napoleon III built a summer palace here for his wife, Empress Eugenie. The oceanside palace is now the esteemed Hotel du Palais, a landmark for the dynamic, beach-rimmed Biarritz. Surfing in France originated here in the late 1950s, and the sport has become synonymous with the city. You might watch surfers riding the waves that funnel into the Bay of Biscay, or simply comb the lovely beaches. Biarritz also has an urbane personality and museums dedicated to everything from Asian art to chocolate. Don’t miss the blue-domed Russian Orthodox Church, built for visiting Russian aristocrats in the 19th century. Pedestrian-friendly Biarritz is lined with fashion boutiques and shops selling French cheeses, wine, porcelain dolls, and Basque tablecloths. Enjoy Basque-influenced cuisine such as veal stew, cured ham dishes, tapas and foie gras.

Bilbao

Bilbao straddles the Bilbao or Nervión River some 15 miles from the Cantabrian Seacoast. An industrial city, the metropolitan area ranks among Spain's most important commercial and financial centers. Proximity to the sea and early discovery of vast mineral deposits led to the development of the port. The modern city center is El Ensanche (literally "the expansion"). Possibly the newest source of great local pride is the remarkable Guggenheim Museum-Bilbao.

9

Gijon

The beautiful beaches of Gijon are singular in their own right. Yet, for art lovers and historians, there is plenty to do in and around the city as well. Namely, there are several uniquely themed museums, including the Campo Valdés Roman Baths, considered one of the most important Roman remains in northern Spain. Visit the aquarium, the botanical gardens or simply stroll through the streets of Cimavilla, the oldest part of Gijon.
